Houston First Time Home Buyers Eggnog Recipe

Hello and welcome to Houston First Time Home Buyers Edition, where we provide useful information to help Houston first time home buyers make the most informed decision when it comes to buying, decorating, and maintaining their first home.

Eggnog is loved the world over. Some people like it with just one type of alcohol. However, many recipes call for a combination of rum, brandy, whisky, and bourbon. Whatever you taste, have you ever stop to think where the idea came from for this yuletide drink. Well, I have, and this is what I found out.

  1. There are debates about how exactly eggnog came to be.

  2. Most people who have probed eggnog origins, agree that it seems to have morphed from an English drink called “posset.”

  3. Posset was used as a remedy in England as far back as the 15th century

  4. Posset’s main ingredient was milk, which was heated, flavored with alcoholic drinks, and curdled before being sweetened with the same types of spices used for eggnog today.

  5. It was considered a healthy and comforting drink, and was thought to help people recover from various colds and illnesses. Who knew?

  6. Posset varied and evolved over time to include ingredients like egg yolks, and sometimes breadcrumbs.

  7. Though not 100% sure, it is likely that eggnog sprung up as a colonial cousin of posset in British North America.

  8. The term “eggnog” started popping up in North America in the late 1700s.

  9. George Washington is rumored to be among the first Americans to publicize his own boozy eggnog recipe for Christmas parties.

  10. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point was the scene of the infamous Eggnog Riot on 1826

Even if its historical mysteries go unsolved, eggnog remains an indisputable part of the American winter holiday season. Below is a egg substitute recipe you may enjoy. Cheers.

Egg Substitute Eggnog Recipe
Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 2 tablespoons of pure vanilla extract, divided

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 6 large egg yolks

  • 1/2 cup plus 3/4 cup powdered sugar, divided

  • 1/2 cup aquafaba liquid from a can of chickpeas

  • 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar or lemon juice

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 1-1/4 cup golden rum

  • 2 cups half-and-half

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Directions

Combine milk, cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large sauce pan over medium heat. Heat slowly while stirring constantly to avoid scorching. Turn off heat right before it boil. Next, combine egg yolks and powdered sugar in a large bowl. Whisk briskly until the mixture becomes light in color and begin to thickened.

Slowly add a spoonful of the hot milk to the egg mixture, and whisk vigorously. Once most of the hot milk has been added to the eggs, pour the mixture back into the sauce pan on the stove. Whisk the mixture constantly for a few minutes over medium heat, until it begin to slightly thickened. It will thicken more as it cools. Remove from heat. Let the mixture cool completely or refrigerate overnight.

Whip up cup of aquafaba with cream of tartar for 6 minutes until it’s very fluffy. Add a tablespoon of vanilla and whip again for another minute or so.

Sprinkle in cup powdered sugar and mix again for another minute or two until it’s incorporated and your meringue is stiff and shiny. Set aside.

Stir the rum and half-and-half into the cooled egg mixture.

In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream, adding in the tablespoon of granulated sugar until medium-soft peaks form. First, fold the whipped aquafaba into the eggnog mixture. Then fold the whipped cream into the eggnog mixture. Pour into individual glasses and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg if desired.
